This episode is an allegory for the internet and the promises of “digital” marketing. It’s an irrefutable fact that while social media and the internet have provided unparalleled ways to make money, they’ve also enabled unprecedented pathways to disrupt, destroy, and desecrate our lives at individual and societal levels.
Ad fraud is such a problem. Dark data pools are such a problem. Runaway recommendation algorithms that send people down radicalized rabbit holes is SUCH A HUGE FUCKING PROBLEM!
Thankfully there are plenty of marketers (Claire Atkin, Nandini Jammi, Dr. Augustine Fou, Bob Hoffman) that are taking these issues head on and trying to make marketing and advertising a more equitable and safe way for businesses to reach people.
